Teacher guide reSolve: Prime factorisation

This sequence of four lessons explores prime factorisation. Students solve a puzzle using factor strings, play a dice game to learn about prime numbers, develop a method for finding all of the factors of a number, and engage in an investigation of highest common factors and lowest common multiples of two numbers, and how prime factors are related to this. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, a supporting PowerPoint presentation, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the year 7 mathematics curriculum. It relates to the content description about investigating index notation and representing whole numbers as products of powers of prime numbers. Students engage in a range of activities investigating how whole numbers can be expressed as prime factors, and representing these prime powers using index notation.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as students engage in multiple activities estimating and calculating with whole numbers.
